We educate children of all ages on compassion and respect for people, animals and the environment. Not only does humane education serve to prevent violence, it works hand-in-hand with character education programs that have been embraced by many Montgomery elementary schools. Humane education can be an integral part of any character education program. Currently, the Montgomery Humane Society visits schools, scout troops, community fairs and YMCA programs to educate children.
The Montgomery Humane Society designed a reading program called “Read to the Paws,” where a therapy dog listens to a student read. The students are allowed to read at their own pace without judgment or criticism. Struggling readers make great strides with their reading and communication skills and even build their self-esteem with the therapy dogs.
