The Montgomery Humane Society’s Community Cat Program provides Montgomery City and County residents an alternative to euthanizing feral cats by enabling residents to trap, spay/neuter, vaccinate, ear-tip and release them back to the community.
Before programs like this, shelters like ours relied on catching and euthanizing feral cats to control their population. This approach failed to decrease the feral cat population and the number of feral cats euthanized each year. Increasingly, the public believes that the money spent on euthanizing should be re-allocated to programs that help animals, like the Community Cat Program. Over 80% of Americans believe that leaving a stray cat outside to live out his life is more humane than having the cat caught and killed, according to a national survey conducted for Alley Cat Allies by Harris Interactive.
How It Works
1. Acquire A Trap. Purchase a humane, box-style 32″ x 15″ x 10″ cat trap at a local hardware store.
2. Humanely Trap Your Community Cat and Bring Her to MHS’s Animal Intake. Trap your community cat then schedule an appointment to bring her to the Animal Intake Department. Let the Intake Technician know that this is a community cat that you would like returned to you so that you can release her to your community.
3. MHS Will Send Your Kitty To Surgery. Your community cat will go to surgery, typically, the next day, and will be fixed, ear-tipped, and vaccinated for rabies. You will receive a phone call letting you know when to pick her up.
4. Pick Up Your Community Cat. Pick up your community cat at the same place that you dropped her off.
5. Release Your Community Cat Where You Trapped Her.
